Orofacial myology, a specialty field in speech pathology, focuses on nasal breathing and appropriate resting postures of the tongue, lips, and jaw. Common disruptions, known as orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs), will be discussed including sucking habits, tethered oral tissues, and the familiar “tongue thrust” all of which can greatly impair facial, dental, and airway development.

Learners Outcomes

Orofacial Myology
Participants will be given an overview of Orofacial Myology, a specialty within the field of Speech-Language Pathology. Orofacial Myologists treat Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) which focus on nasal breathing and appropriate resting postures of the tongue, lips, and jaw. Airway problems, sucking habits, tongue/lip ties, and the familiar “tongue thrust” disrupt natural resting postures. These disruptions are detrimental to facial and dental development which may cause problems with articulation of speech sounds. Participants will learn about the detailed case history obtained during a myofunctional evaluation and how OMDs can impact speech, feeding, chewing, swallowing, and breathing through interactive audience participation.

Objectives:

  • List three areas of focus in orofacial myology.
  • Describe three functions of the tongue and the “tongue thrust” myth.
  • Describe the potential impact of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) on speech and facial development.


Tongue Tie and Other Tethered Oral Tissues (TOTs) are receiving attention due to children having difficulty with breastfeeding and the heightened awareness of facial health and development. Focus will be on tongue resting posture, mouth breathing, and possible speech delays that can occur from restricted tissue. Terminology and some classification systems will be discussed while highlighting need for a thorough functional assessment of range of motion. Clinical cases will be reviewed and expansive literature sources will be given for future study.
Objectives
Describe limitations that can be seen with a swallowing, breastfeeding, and possibly, speech from uncorrected restrictions.
Explain the reasons tongue tie corrections were decreased or eliminated.
Describe the types of professionals involved in correcting restrictions.
Content Disclosure: This course focuses on orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs), and tethered oral tissues (TOTs) in relation to speech-language pathology. Additional areas of discussion will include the professions of dentistry, sleep medicine, and lactation.

Cancellation Policy
for Participants Prior to 10 days preceding course: Participant can apply registration to a future course or online offering or the participant can request a refund of the registration less $75 fee which covers cost of administrative work.
Any cancellation within 10 calendar days of the course will credited for a future course or Expressions Seminar online offering.

Cancellation Policy for Expressions Seminars
If Expressions Seminars has to cancel the course due to inclement weather, illness, or family emergency, all participants will be notified via email used to register for the course and a future date will be selected.
If a participant cannot attend the new date, they will have the following options:

  1. Watch the on-demand version of the course (if there is one available) and have access for ONE WEEK.
  2. Accept a credit for a future seminar either online or in-person.
  3. Request a refund of registration fee.
